Painting the Light We Carry
Artist Bio
Kimberly Brayman is a Canadian-American painter known for contemporary figurative portraiture that balances emotional depth with expressive color and layered texture. Her background in psychology informs the sensitivity and insight with which she approaches each subject, while her international experiences shape a broader perspective on the shared emotional threads that connect people across cultures.
Working between abstraction and realism, Brayman builds her paintings through intuitive mark-making, fluid washes, and moments of emergence. Rather than beginning with a fixed outcome, she allows each figure to surface gradually, creating work that feels both grounded and evolving.
This process gives her portraits a sense of presence that goes beyond likeness, inviting viewers to look deeper into the emotional landscape of the subject.
PROCESS & SYMBOLISM
Each painting begins with expressive, unpredictable layers, acrylic washes, stenciling, spray paint, and gestural marks that reflect both structure and spontaneity. From this foundation, the figure emerges, shaped by instinct as much as intention.
Brayman often incorporates symbolic elements such as butterflies, ravens, and horses. These recurring forms serve as visual language within her work, representing transformation, mystery, and freedom. Rather than acting as decoration, they deepen the narrative and invite personal interpretation.
Her use of color, often bold, luminous, and layered, becomes a way of communicating emotion. Light is not simply painted, it is revealed.
Artist Statement
I create expressive portrait paintings that explore the emotional landscapes we all carry.
My work begins in abstraction, through layers of color, movement, and intuitive mark-making. From that space, a figure emerges, not as a perfect representation, but as an emotional presence shaped by experience, memory, and feeling.
My background in psychology continues to influence the way I see people. I am drawn to the quiet strength, vulnerability, and resilience that exist beneath the surface. Whether I am painting a single subject or building a more symbolic composition, I am interested in what is felt as much as what is seen.
Recurring elements such as butterflies, ravens, and horses appear throughout my work as symbols of transformation, mystery, and freedom. These forms help carry the story beyond the figure itself.
At its core, my work is about connection, to ourselves, to each other, and to the light we carry through all stages of life.
