Edge of the Divide

Edge of the Divide holds the tension between closeness and distance. A horse and rider stand side by side, both vivid and watchful, their forms emerging from layers of blue, red, violet, and white. The composition feels still at first, yet charged with the quiet awareness that something is shifting.

The horse dominates the foreground with a steady, searching presence, while the cowboy stands partially in shadow beside it. Their connection feels restrained rather than sentimental. They appear to occupy the same emotional threshold, each carrying strength, uncertainty, and a kind of guarded loyalty.

The abstract marks around them create a sense of movement and inner weather. Red lines, small symbols, layered color, and dark vertical passages suggest a landscape that is both physical and psychological. The divide may be between past and future, instinct and choice, solitude and companionship.

As a contemporary figurative painting, Edge of the Divide speaks to resilience, trust, and the moments when identity is shaped at the edge of change. Kimberly Brayman’s layered abstraction and figurative realism allow the subjects to feel grounded in Western imagery while reaching into a deeper emotional terrain.
